These botanical pieces, in particular, represent my evolution as a classically trained painter—bringing the skills I’ve honed painting the human figure into my renderings of nature. THE STORY OF THE ARTWORK
This painting is from my latest series of oil paintings, inspired by my love for mother nature and my philosophy that living in harmony with her seasons brings our lives into balance. In Autumn, just as the trees let their leaves fall to the ground, we are encouraged to let go of anything that doesn’t serve us. We feel closer to our true selves as we let things fall away, leaving only our deepest values and dreams behind.
Finding Flow in Letting Go was inspired on a brisk Autumn morning, as I was walking along the Bow River Trail in Banff National Park. I was stopped in my tracks by these gorgeous dogwoods on the side of the trail. The mystical morning light had transformed their verdant leaves to glow blue and purple as if a ghostly glow fell upon the understory. So used to seeing leaves bathed in bright yellow sunlight, this moment in nature reminded me that when we let ourselves follow the flow of nature, we leave behind our preconceived ideas and embrace the beauty of what’s right in front of us.
