THE STORY

This painting is from my latest series of oil paintings, inspired by my love for mother nature and my philosophy that living in harmony with her seasons brings our lives into balance. Root Down to Rise Up was inspired by a nature walk on Madeline Island in Wisconsin in late Spring. I was mesmerized by the groves of fiddlehead ferns reaching towards the sunlight. In a dark forest with rays of yellow sunlight piercing through the canopy, these ferns were reaching up out of the darkness towards the light. They shone bright green and yellow, almost glowing neon in comparison to the darkness around them, transforming the scene from one filled with shadows to one filled with dazzling light.

As a yoga teacher, I have always loved the cue “root down to rise up” that we use when we lead our students to a standing posture. It means that we must focus on the connection we have with the earth beneath us and ground ourselves down into it before we can reach up towards the sky. Just as these fern are growing out of the earth up towards the light.
