This painting is my artistic expression of what taking up space looks like. It’s a message for the person who is done shrinking, even when the world asks them to stay small. I painted these leaves larger than life, because their uniqueness deserves to be seen. The shadows represent all of the parts of ourself we feel we have to hide, in order to show up in this world. When in truth, it is because of our shadows that we shine the brightest light. I’ve come to love that contrast. The quiet depth. The richness it brings to the picture of our lives. For there is no healing without hurt. There is no freedom without a cage. When we show up in our bigness, with all parts of ourselves, we allow our whole selves to be seen. And I have yet to find any feeling or experience in this life more powerful than that.
